(1) Heightland attended SHS; he married classmate Betty Berardi, who died May 12, 1973 (our 10th Reunion souvenir book was dedicated to Betty). Heightland was shot in the back of the head by a sniper when a helicopter, attempting to land at night, requested that the lights in the Landing Zone be turned on. Heightland flipped on the lights from his position on the ground, thus exposing himself to the sniper. All this according to Cheryl Born Kilroy, who said the helicopter was able to land successfully, and Heightland was awarded a medal posthumously for his actions.

(2) Holbrook attended Barrett Jr. High ‘63 (lived three doors from Barbara Zwilling); wounded by a land mine and hospitalized in Washington D.C. for years; died before his release; his mother successfully petitioned to have his name added to the Wall, as deaths which occurred due to war injuries, in Holbrook’s case years later, were not counted as war casualties.

(3) Lee died under rather heroic circumstances. His family once thought he would be nominated for the Congressional Medal of Honor, but he was not. Lee was so revered and admired by his fellow soldiers that after the war, when they were stationed at an Army base in Germany, they petitioned to have the base renamed after Lee. That was done in 1977, and Lee’s mother went there to attend the ceremonies. Lee’s brother, Paul Lee SHS ’66, was in law school at the time and could not attend. Since the end of the Cold War, the base was turned over to the locals. To learn more about Camp Phillip L. Lee, check the link:  http://www.grenzer.com/camp.htm.

(4) Thompson married his classmate Luana Morehart SHS ’66.

(5) Voytko lived on Wilson Avenue just south of Frebis Avenue,; neighbor to Brenda Reese and Ralph Billiter; he attended Corpus Christi and Marion-Franklin ’66.

(6) Silver Star, 2 Bronze Stars w/Combat V, 5 Purple Hearts, Nat’l Defense Service Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, and many more (as it appeared in Laverack’s obit of May 2005).

(7) from a newspaper article (either Columbus Dispatch or The Optic) as follows: When his unit became engaged with a large enemy force, May exposed himself to hostile fire as he placed accurate fire, enabling his comrades to evacuate the wounded and withdraw to a more defensive position.

(8) Mitchell is the husband of classmate Karen Edinger Mitchell
